Hi Kiwim,

Sorry you haven’t had a reply to your post yet!

There are two alternatives:

- You can try an teach yourself with some of the good books out there.
- You can try learning with a teacher online.

First, you should get a copy of this book:

http://www.aacm.org/shop/product156.html

It’s the best general introduction to Ragas for the beginner, and it packed with great material. The notation is written in “sargam,” but it’s very easy to learn

Prof. Sanjoy Bandopadhyay teaches online and has an excellent reputation. You can contact him here:

http://www.geocities.com/sitar_sanjoy/

My teacher, Irshad Khan, also teaches sitar online and has students all over the world.  You can reach him here:

http://www.irshadkhan.net

Let us know if we can give you any more details.. good luck!

Hi With a user name such as kiwim, I take it you have some connection with New Zealand. I live in Auckland and play sitar. While I have no advice to offer, I would say it would be way easier for you to learn sitar because of your guitar playing background. I think an important aspect is to be able to hold the sitar in a way that keeps your left hand free to move up and down the neck.
