I just bought a my first sitar and I started tuning it, but then i noticed that the first mogara touches the 5th string and that it kills the sound of the string… Is my sitar made incorrectly? Can someone Help what should I do with the first mogara? Should there be enough space for the fifth string to sound? I attached picture of my sitars strings and mogara.

It looks like a very minor problem and will be easy to fix.

Do you know the maker of the sitar? Did you purchase the sitar new or second-hand?

The the hole for the cikari post supporting the madya SA cikari wire was not drilled at the proper angle. For this to be fix correctly, the post needs to be removed, the hole filled with a small dowel, and then a new hole drilled at a slight angle, so that the post slants away a little bit from the PA chikari. Another approach would be to cut a new slot for the PA cikari in the tar gahan (string nut), so that the PA cikari string sits a little farther away from the SA cikari. If you opt for drilling a new hole, you might also have to give the same treatment to the tar SA cikari post, as those two SA cikari strings might become too close after adjusting the madya SA post. Best is to take the instrument to a sitar maker.
